Horno Building

Apr 17–18, 2027

9:00 am–4:00 pm

A two day workshop at our little ranch south of Santa Fe, New Mexico, on how to build your own functional adobe horno oven from the land. We will go over all steps of the process, including how lay your stone foundation, mix your mud mortar, lay the adobes, build the dome and plaster your horno. This workshop will give you the skills and confidence to go home and build your own adobe horno for you and your community to bake in.

This Horno Building Workshop is part two of a series and does not include learning to build adobe bricks – if you would like to learn how to make adobe please join us for part one of this series.

No previous experience required, all skill levels and backgrounds are welcome. In each workshop there are long time adobe afficionados as well as folks with no hands on adobe background at all, only a desire to connect more deeply with the land and learn the magic of making something out what’s around us. There is enough one on one time built into the workshop to allow for all backgrounds and levels of experience. Lunch is included both days.

First we will learn how to lay a traditional stone foundation. Then we’ll practice mud mixing and brick laying. Then we will fill our base with rocks, sand and mud and make a flat and even baking surface. Then we will start on the dome.

ABOUT AMAURY

Amaury Bargioni is a professional Adobe Horno Builder based in Santa Fe, but originally from Paris, France. Amaury’s interest in Land Art led him to Adobe, from making compositions rearranging elements of the landscape to literally making things out of the earth. He runs Eye of the Horno, an organization dedicated to maintaining the practice of earth building and wood-fired cooking using earthen ovens.

Amaury is a student of Ernest Aragon, a legendary adobe builder in New Mexico and a recipient of the The Earthbuilders’ Honorary Lifetime Member Award. Over the last few years, Amaury has introduced over 150 people to the craft of adobe through his building workshops, partnering with organizations such the New Mexico Youth Conservation Corps, The Semilla Project, the Santa Fe Indian School, and the Santa Fe Botanical Garden. His Adobe work has been commissioned by private individuals in Rio Rancho, Albuquerque, Santa Fe and most recently by Site Santa Fe.

The exact location of the workshop will be sent to registered participants the week before arrival.
