Fleece Spinning and Natural Dye with Sara Buscaglia

 

Come join us as we learn the art of spinning fleece and dying yarn with plants and minerals from artist and farmer Sara Buscaglia. At Moon Horse Ranch we have a flock of five angora goats whose fleece we’ve been shearing this past year but don’t know how to spin. Sara is an artist and farmer from Colorado who will be joining us to teach a two day workshop on how to spin the fleece into yarn on spinning wheels in our fields, then dye the yarn with plants from the land. We will be experimenting with natural dyes made from plants found at Moon Horse Ranch, as well as flowers grown on Sara’s farm in Colorado. We will have a chance to meet the flock of goats at Moon Horse Ranch during the workshop, to see the whole arc from goat to fleece to spinning wheel to yarn to dye pot.

This workshop is open to all backgrounds and levels of experience. Beginners to spinning and natural dye are welcome.

Please note that the solar eclipse is the morning of the 14th, from 10:37-10:39 am in Santa Fe. Galisteo Basin and Cerrillos Hills State Park are two places close to us that will have amazing views of the eclipse, and a close drive after to come to the workshop.

ABOUT SARA BUSCAGLIA OF FARM AND FOLK

Sara is an organic farmer, natural dyer and textile artist residing in the high desert of southwest Colorado. She is a lifelong student and steward of the land. Sara's inspiration is found in the paradigm shifting slow processes of tending soil, seeds, and plants. Through her experience of being directly connected to food, natural color and fiber she has gained an understanding and appreciation of their true value.

Sara will be bringing sulfur cosmos, dyer's coreopsis, dyer's chamomile, weld, madder root, oak and elm leaves, Hopi Black Dye sunflower seeds, and indigo leaves grown on her farm in Colorado.

Goat Shepherdess Workshop

Goat Shepherding Mother and Child Workshop

Join us for a one day workshop with shepherdess Amanita Thorpe Berto and her three year old daughter Miracle as they teach us about the regenerative land practices of goat shepherding. Amanita has been grazing a flock of goats and sheep since she was a child growing up on a farm in Galisteo. In 2010 she founded Horned Locust Remediation, a regenerative landscaping service that travels all over Northern New Mexico with a trailer of goats and sheep using grazing to control weeds, clear allergens, prevent fires, and put nutrients and minerals back into the soil. While Amanita has almost 200 goats and sheep, she will be bringing just 12 mother and baby goats with her to Moon Horse Ranch, because we have our own goats who want to eat our weeds and grasses. She will also be bringing a puppy Livestock Guardian Dog for us to meet. She will be teaching us about how goats control weeds, prevent fires, and help enrich our soil. She will also be teaching us about kidding and lambing, best animal husbandry practices, and demonstrating milking. Her 3 year old goat shepherdess daughter Miracle will be with her, teaching alongside her, and children are welcome and free at this workshop. Landscape Photography

Join mother and daughter photographers Lapita and Tyana Arviso for a hands-on creative experience highlighting photographic techniques that encapsulate the beauty of the desert landscape.

Together we will learn to honor the beauty of land through the practice of photography. Workshop participants will spend an afternoon in the fields at Moon Horse Ranch learning to photograph the flora, fauna, land, and sky. All backgrounds, cameras, and equipment are welcome; please reach out to Lapita and Tyana if you have any questions on specific camera and equipment needs. This workshop is limited to 12. In case of clouds covering the moon we will shift our focus to photographing the flora and fauna of the landscape and the sky above us. Our hope in offering a two day workshop is that at least one, and hopefully two evenings will be spent photographing the moon in all her glory.

UNDER THE DESERT MOON: A LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP AT MOON HORSE RANCH

Join mother and daughter photographers Lapita and Tyana Arviso for a Landscape Workshop, an intimate, hands-on photography experience just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Limited to 12 workshop guests, this two-day weekend workshop June 27–28 invites participants to slow down and learn to honor the beauty of land through photography. Together we will spend evenings in the fields at Moon Horse Ranch photographing the desert landscape, horses, goats, flora, fauna, and the rising full moon, while exploring storytelling through imagery. The workshop will focus on composition techniques, reading the landscape, working with natural light, and dialing in camera settings for sunset and full-moon photography, along with portfolio review and hands-on guidance in the field. All backgrounds and levels of experience are welcome. The ticket includes dinner in the field at Moon Horse Ranch on both evenings.

Based in Santa Fe, Diné artist Tyana Arviso is a photographer whose work explores place, presence, and the quiet power of the land. Rooted in the landscapes of the American Southwest, her imagery is shaped by intuition, restraint, and a deep respect for the environments she documents. Vast horizons, subtle textures, and fleeting light become vessels for memory and meaning.

Self-taught with over a decade of professional experience, Tyana’s practice moves fluidly between fine art, editorial, and commercial worlds. Our Approach

We keep gear requirements intentionally minimal. This workshop is rooted in slowing down. Together we will learn to see light, understand composition, and move with intention. Focusing on storytelling and connection to place, rather than relying on having the most advanced equipment.

Quilting and Natural Dye with Maura Grace Ambrose

Join artist Maura Grace Ambrose for an engaging two-day workshop as we come together to explore the art of creating a mini quilt project that serves as a foundation for natural dyes and quilting. This workshop aims to foster a sense of community, allowing participants to connect with one another in a natural environment while developing their skills and creating a stunning piece of functional art.

Day 1: Hand-Dyeing Organic Linen
On the first day, we will gather as a group to learn the process of hand-dyeing organic cotton using natural dyes. Under the expert guidance of artist Maura Grace Ambrose, you will learn the magic of color mixing through over-dyeing. The dyes will be derived from plants and natural sources, making your fabric both beautiful and eco-friendly. Connect with fellow participants as you exchange ideas and learn from one another's experiences.

Day 2: Creating Half Square Triangle Quilt Blocks
On the second day, we will utilize the hand-dyed fabric from day one to cut and sew half square triangle quilt blocks. These blocks will then be stuffed with a mixture of lavender and sage, adding a soothing and aromatic touch to your creation. Work alongside your peers, share tips and techniques, and build lasting connections within the quilting community.

This workshop is open to individuals of all backgrounds and levels of experience, including beginners in quilting and natural dyeing. Come join us and unleash your creativity while learning new skills in this unique and inspiring workshop led by Maura Grace Ambrose, where connection and learning in community are at the heart of the experience.

ABOUT ARTIST MAURA GRACE AMBROSE

During a creatively charged summer road trip in 2011, Maura followed her dream to combine gardening and quilting. Coming from a family that made clothes and quilts, it brings Maura joy and meaning to connect with ancestors through the work, and carry on the tradition of heritage crafts.Maura pioneered a movement of hand-dyed fabrics and hand-stitched quilts through sharing her process of yielding dye from plants and using those colors for quilt making. Folk Fibers grew into a brand that is international and sought after by collectors of heirloom quilts.

The studio and garden are a sanctuary of color, a place to commune with color. This is where the work begins and develops a sympathetic approach to color, from seed, to plant, to dye, to textile.

Maura teaches workshops from her home studio and abroad. The workshops are a balance of technique and play, allowing experimentation to develop into creative flow.

Maura lives with her husband and 2 kids on a hilltop in Bastrop, TX and are stewards of 10 woodland acres by the lower Colorado River, living a lifestyle that feeds her creatively. Choosing to ebb and flow with the seasons yields authentic and life-giving work.

The Art of Herbal Medicine for Horses

Join us for a two-day immersion into the world of herbal medicine care for horses. Blending traditional wisdom with modern practice, you will explore a variety of medicinal plants and how they support equine health, while deepening your connection to the land, the seasons, and the deep-rooted relationship between plants, animals, and people.

In many Indigenous cultures around the world, there is no distinction between healing practices for people and animals; plants that support human wellness are also used to care for animals. ABOUT JORDAN STANTON

Jordan is a lifelong horsewoman, herbalist, and the founder of The Soul Horse Way and creator at Horsewomanship Herbals. 

She comes from a lineage of Indigenous women healers from Mexico, and her work is deeply rooted in this ancestral tradition. A masterful educator and facilitator, Jordan has spent the last 27 years guiding transformational experiences for people from all walks of life, in places as varied as juvenile justice programs, corporate boardrooms, and street-based outreach with homeless youth.

Jordan is certified in herbalism through the Sage Mountain School of Herbal Studies and the Self Heal School of Herbal Studies, and holds certifications from both Bach Flower Essences and Flower Essence Services. With nearly 30 years of hands-on experience using herbs to support the health of people and animals, her practice blends deep tradition with lived wisdom.

She is also certified in Waldorf Education and is, at heart, a community educator, committed to making learning meaningful, accessible, and rooted in relationship. TRAVEL AND LODGING

Workshop participants are responsible for their own travel to and lodging in Santa Fe. For those traveling from out of town, the nearest airports are in Santa Fe, 20 minutes away, and Albuquerque, which is an hour drive away. For lodging, we recommend the El Rey Court, who has offered registered workshop participants up to 15% off a four night stay. The exact address of the workshop will be sent to registered participants the week of arrival. Moon Horse Ranch is 30 minutes south of downtown Santa Fe, between the villages of Galisteo and Cerillos. San Marcos Seed and Feed is a 5 minute drive from Moon Horse Ranch.
